Our U21 team played the first round of the championship against Ballybrown in Mick Neville Park Rathkeale on Sunday 02.03.14.

The pitch was in good condition but the weather was not. Luckily for us we played with the gale in the first half and Darragh O Donovan hit over two long range points, one from a free the other from play. Barry Murphy then latched onto a breaking ball and buried it and he also hit over two more points, a close in free and one from play. Tony Joe Berkery and Shane O Connell also scored a point each from play and our scoring was completed with another free from Darragh O Donovan.

Ballybrown struggled with the wind in the first half and it looked like they may not score. However not long before half time a long range free dropped short and when it broke the Ballybrown corner forward pulled and it hit the net. They added a further point from play and this left the half time score at 1-7 to 1-1.

The second half was a different story and Ballybrown piled on the pressure. Eoghan Mac and the backs played well as a unit with Tommie Hayes making some excellent blocks. Ballybrown scored six points in the second half with three frees and three from play. We found it difficult to get out of our half and did not score. The final score 1-7 to 1-7.

Overall a draw was a fair result in the circumstances.
