Junior B County Quarter Final Replay

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be this year for our Junior B team as they have now exited the County Championship competition at the quarter final stage. It wasn’t for lack of hard work and effort that we lost out to Monaleen in the quarter final replay this afternoon and we were in it til the bitter end – that end not coming until after extra time in the replay in Bruff.

Back on Sunday 30th September,  the initial drawn game saw Doon score 1-7 against Monaleen’s 0-10; so we faced a replay which has been fixed a number of times but was finally played today. Both teams knew what the other was capable of and both knew it wasn’t going to be easy.

Today, the wind dictated a lot of the play but with the changeover of halves it favoured both teams equally throughout the entire 80 minutes.

Doon were on the backfoot as Monaleen scored a goal after only 3 minutes of the first half but we pulled it back with a few points, staying in contention,  and on 19 minutes corner forward Brian Fenton scored a cracker of a goal assisted by Bobby Ryan and Conor Ryan. Two frees from Ian Bourke finished out the half for us and saw us lead 1-6 to 1-4.

Captain Rob McLoughlin started off the second half with a point after just two minutes so things were looking up, but not for long as we conceded 5 frees in a row from the 4th to the 15th minute, all resulting in points for Monaleen. Trailing by 2 points with 7 minutes to go, we picked the heads up and two frees from the stick of Ian Bourke again saw us level at the end of the 60 minutes - the second free coming practically at the final whistle!

So we headed to extra time with the wind getting stronger and Monaleen opted to play with it at their backs for the first 10. They didn’t take any advantage of it, and the only score of that half came from yet another Ian Bourke free. So we were up by 1 and even though it was nail-biting stuff, it seemed that we very much could have done it now that there was only 10 minutes left and we would have the wind in our favour.  But it obviously wasn’t meant to be…Monaleen got a point 3 minutes in so still deadlocked. Trying and willing things to go our way, a number of wides later the deadlock was broken and it was Monaleen who did it, with a free at the end. Game over 1-11 to 1-10. Commiserations to the Doon team and management. It’s been a long year but not without reward as we are still East Champions!
