Junior A County League Final

Doon secured a second county title within a week last night in Caherconlish when our Junior A team beat Na Piarsaigh in the County League Final. This added to the Junior B County title won the previous Friday night over Blackrock. Last night’s game was the David Stapleton show from start to finish with the centre forward getting all of Doon’s scores in the first half (3 points from frees and 1 point from play). At half time we trailed 0-7 to 0-4 and Na Piarsaigh had been the superior side. In the second half, it was Stapleton again who opened the scoring with a point from play just a minute in. Na Piarsaigh replied with 2 which were quickly followed by a superb point by Jack Cummins from a sideline cut. With just 7 minutes remaining in the game, we were behind by 4 – 0-10 to 0-6. Looking like all was lost, we played on, but hit countless wides in our efforts. Having just had a goal disallowed, on the 59th minute, we were awarded penalty by referee Richard Moloney. David Stapleton stepped up to take it and made sure it hit the back of the net with force. The puck-out landed in our favour and yet again Stapleton got his hands on it and blasted it home for another goal. A winning margin of just a single point (Doon 2-6 Na Piarsaigh 0-11), with Stapleton even acknowledging in his acceptance speech the last-second stealing of victory from the city champions.

The East Junior A Championship starts with first round against Kilteely Droomkeen this Sunday evening at 7.30pm in Cappamore.
