In a double-header for Doon last Saturday evening (20th July) in Caherconlish, both our Junior A and Junior B teams were beaten in the first round of their respective East Championship campaigns.

First up at 5pm, the Junior A’s played Kilteely Dromkeen, and lost out on a scoreline of Kilteely Dromkeen 0-14 Doon 0-7.

A very slow first half saw just 2 points for Doon, coming from Shane O’Connell in the 9th minute and an Eamonn Stapleton free in the 29th minute. In that time, our opponents had a tally of 11. Trailing by 9, we did outscore Kilteely Dromkeen in the second half 5 points to 3, with 2 from Tony Joe Berekery, 2 from Bernard Crowe and 1 from Jason Ryan. However, this wasn’t enough to catch their good lead and the game ended 0-14 to 0-7.

Team - Derek Ryan, Jack Hayes, Tom Murphy, Arthur Crowe, Patrick Cummins, Eamonn Stapleton, Jack Cummins, Jason Ryan, James O’Brien, Tony Joe Berekery, Bernard Crowe, Daniel Quirke, Shane O’Connell, Don Anderson, Dylan O’Dwyer.

Subs – Raymond Ryan, Fiachra O’Grady, John Hayes.

The 7pm game at the same venue was a much closer affair as our Junior B’s took on South Liberties. Three points from Paddy Coleman frees in addition to points from Rob McLoughlin, Ger Crowe and Seamie Ryan saw us at 6 points at half time, with Liberties 3 ahead. While we got off to a great start in the second half securing the first 2 points of the half by Shane Whelan and Rob McLoughlin, we were dealt a blow with a South Liberties goal in the 6th minute. There was plenty of time to recover however and points were exchanged for the remainder of the half, but while we did score the last 3 points of the game, as the final whistle went we were still 2 points short. Final score South Liberties 1-13 Doon 0-14.
