County Senior Hurling Championship

A fantastic victory full of passion, determination, skill, accuracy and some great individual performances set Doon apart from their opponents Na Piarsaigh last Sunday afternoon – 16th June - in the second round of the county senior hurling championship. While down to 14 men with 25 minutes remaining, securing a victory was going to be struggle but we did it and by the smallest possible margin - final score 1-17 to 3-10.

It was a competitive first half in which we missed a few goal chances, but scored ten points versus Na Piarsaigh's 1-4. Their goal came at 27 minutes just after a purple match for Doon where we scored 5 unanswered points. So we headed to the dressing room 3 points to the good.

Na Piarsaigh got the first score of the second half - a point just a minute in, but Cathal McNamara responded almost immediately with a free to ensure we held our lead. We were dealt a blow just 6 minutes into the half when Pat Ryan was sent to the line by referee Richard Moloney. Far from giving up, we pushed on & kept control of the game. A Micheal Ryan goal assisted by Darragh O'Donovan in the 19th minute was a blessing for us. This saw the score lie at Doon 1-14 to Na Piarsaigh’s 2-9. Just minutes later, Kevin Downes netted at the other end and we allowed one more over the bar from the city side. In the last 5 minutes of the game we saw serious pride in our Doon jersey with a rally of short concise passes leading to two vital points thanks to Micheal Ryan and sub Dean Coleman. With the sides level and the final minutes ticking down, it was all on Cathal McNamara’s shoulders when he was handed the task of a long range free and he happily obliged with a point. That was the last score of the game, and it belonged to Doon and the victory was ours! Credit to the entire team, subs & management but a special mention for centre back Cathal McNamara & his man of the match performance scoring 4 frees and a 65 in this thrilling game. We now happily look forward to our third group match of the campaign against Granagh Ballingarry.
