Our senior team exited the County Senior Hurling Championship in heartbreaking fashion last Sunday afternoon (15th Sept) in the Gaelic Grounds in a 2 point defeat to Adare in the semifinal of the competition. It was a thrilling game from the off, with some heart-stopping moments particularly in last 2 minutes of the game when at the 59th minute Adare went ahead for the very first time.
A fantastic start to this match with 3 points from Roger Ryan and a goal from Pat Ryan saw us leading 1-3 to 0-2 with just 5 minutes played. We were aided in the first half by a very strong breeze. By the twelfth minute we led by 7. A cracking goal from Michel Ryan 24 minutes in was a great boost and the scoreboard then read 2-9 to 1-6. There were some points to be exchanged in the next few minutes and at halftime we led 2-11 to 1-9. In the early stages of the second half, we let our lead slip significantly and 17 minutes into this half the sides were level at 2-13 a-piece. In those 17 minutes Adare had scored 1-4 whereas we had just two points – one from Dean Coleman and a free from Micheal Ryan. With just 2 minutes remaining in the game captain Michael Fitzgerald got a point to put us one ahead, but in the next 3 tense minutes Adare pointed 3 times seeing them take the victory on a final score of 2-17 to 2-15. There is no doubt we had been the better team on the day. Sincere commiserations to the players, and entire backroom team on this loss, but congratulations on what had been a most successful campaign up to this point.
