Under lights in Knoclong Doon faced a very strong Ahane team in round 1 of the U21 championship. Ahane aided by a strong breeze stormed into a 2-2 to 0-1 lead in the first ten minutes giving Doon very little time to settle. However Doon began to settle and 4 points from Michael Barry and 1 each from James Power and John Hayes saw Doon trailing by 2-11 to 0-6 at half time.
Doon emerged for the second half a different team and now aided by the wind slowly began to eat into the Ahane lead. Points again from Michael Barry and a goal and a point from Liam Reale in a 2 minute spell had Doon trailing 2-13 to 1-9 with 23 minutes of the second half played. 4 minutes later Darragh Stapleton latched onto a lond ball into the square and dispatched it to the net.
Great credit to the Doon team for their performance in the second half but unfortunately the damage was done in the first half. Doon were unlucky not to have been closer if they availed of their goal opportunites as they did in the second half.
Some notable performances on the Doon team were Martin Byrnes in goal, Diarmuid & Colm Cummins, John Hayes, Michael Barry, Liam Reale and Darragh Spapleton.
