On Tues 25-1-11 Paraic Duffy Director General of the Gaa attended the club house for a questions and answers session. In front of a large gathering he complimented the club on the wonderful facilities we currently have in place at present. Our chairman John R. Walsh opened the meeting by welcoming our prestigious guest to Doon and gave him a brief history of the club.  Among the topics discussed were
  • Loss of revenue from use of Croke Park by the IRFU and FAI and the impact to the GAA
  • The recent announcement of the payment in grants to the GPA totalling nearly €9m over the next 5 years and the role of the GPA in the future
  • Player Welfare, especially at juvenile level and the amount of games played and the impact at exam times
  • The promotion of Gaelic Games in comparison to other sports
  • The impact of inter county hurling on club hurling games and the delays incurred playing club championships
  • Careers and job creation and the associations role in providing opportunities to its members
  • Ticket pricing and allocation
  • Standard of refereeing at all levels

Great credit has to go Mr Duffy on the honest answers and observations he gave on the night. The session lasted approximately 2 hours and all in attendance agreed it had been a very informative and worthwhile exercise.
